ILLUMINATIONS

Set against backdrops of skylines, city scenes, and natural environments, the Illuminations series explores emotional and spiritual terrain using the glow of lights as a means of shedding light on a subject, the feeling of elation, a sense of liberation, staying focused in the ebb and flow of life, and looking to God as the ultimate light when encountering conflict or a very dark, uncertain time in life.

I loved the challenge of creating each of these paintings. After viewing countless photographs of lights at night, in rain, fog, desert, various phases of the day in different settings, and exploring my own emotional responses to scenes caught on camera, a body of work emerged using actual locations in some of the paintings, imaginary places, or a collage of real and imagined places.

Nearly all of these portraits were painted in acrylic. The exception was Restless Rainy Night, which was painted in oil.
